The most common mistake beginners make with digital marketing is jumping in without clear goals. Trust me, I've been there! I started posting randomly on social media and wondered why nothing was happening.

Your first step is to get super clear on what you want to achieve. Do you want to:

  • Drive traffic to your blog?
  • Generate leads for your service-based business?
  • Sell digital or physical products?
  • Build brand awareness for your new venture?

These are examples or bigger goals that you will work towards. All of this might seem like a LOT, and it can be. 

That's why I recommend you choose ONE THING and go with that. That may mean your goal is to gain 100 followers on TikTok or Instagram. Or, it could be to post content every day for the next 2 weeks.

Action step: Write down ONE primary goal and ONE secondary goal for your digital marketing efforts. Be specific! Instead of "make money online," try something like "get 10 new email subscribers per week" or "sell 5 digital products monthly."

As a beginner in digital marketing, having focused goals helps you avoid the overwhelm of trying to do everything at once. When I narrowed my focus to growing my email list first, everything else started falling into place.


Step 2: Identify Your Target Audience (Who Are You Talking To?)

Here's something I wish someone had told me when I first started: you're not trying to reach everyone.

You're trying to reach the RIGHT people.

Digital marketing works best when you get super specific about who your ideal customer is. When I tried to create content for "everyone interested in digital marketing," I got crickets. But when I started focusing on "stay-at-home parents wanting to start side hustles with limited time," my engagement skyrocketed.

Action step: Create a simple avatar of your ideal customer. Give them a name, age, interests, challenges, and goals. What keeps them up at night? What do they dream about? Where do they hang out online?

For example, my avatar might be "Sarah, 34, mother of two, who wants to earn income from home while her kids are in school. She has basic computer skills, loves Pinterest, and is worried about learning technical aspects of online business."

By knowing exactly who you're talking to, your digital marketing instantly becomes more personal and effective. This is how beginners can compete with big brands—through personal connection!

This can change over time, but for now, focus on one avatar. There will be time for refinement once you get started with your digital marketing journey. 


Step 3: Choose Your Digital Marketing Platforms (Where Should You Focus?)

One of the biggest myths in digital marketing is that you need to be everywhere. As a busy mom, I knew that wasn't realistic for me—and it's probably not for you either.

The good news? You only need 1-2 platforms to start seeing results.

When selecting your platforms, consider:

  • Where does your target audience spend their time?
  • What type of content do you enjoy creating?
  • Which platforms align with your strengths?

Action step: Choose ONE primary platform to master first. Here are the best options for beginners:

  • Pinterest: Excellent for driving traffic (my personal favorite, but it takes longer to see results)
  • Instagram/TikTok: Great for visual products and personal brands
  • Email Marketing: Perfect for direct sales and relationship building
  • Blog/Website: Ideal for in-depth content and SEO (again more work and takes longer for results)

Remember: it's better to show up consistently on one platform than sporadically on five.


Step 4: Create Your First Piece of Content (Time to Take Action!)

Now comes the fun part—creating content that connects with your audience and moves you toward your goals.

Many beginners overthink this step, but I promise, your first content doesn't need to be perfect. Mine certainly wasn't! What matters is that you start.

Action step: Create ONE piece of content based on your platform choice from step 3: the easiest is to start creating video content for TikTok or Instagram.

Focus on providing genuine value rather than selling. My most successful early content simply solved problems for my audience—the sales followed naturally once I established trust.


Step 5: Launch & Monitor (Just Get It Out There!)

This is where many beginners get stuck—waiting for everything to be perfect before launching. But I'm going to let you in on a secret: perfect is the enemy of done!

As a mom running after four boys all day, I learned quickly that "good enough" today beats "perfect" someday. Your first digital marketing efforts won't be flawless (mine certainly weren't!), but you'll never improve without real-world feedback.

Action step: Get your content out into the world by:

  • Publishing what you've created, even if it feels scary
  • Setting up one basic system to track results (Google Analytics is free!)

  • Responding to any engagement you receive

Even with just basic analytics, you'll start to see patterns that can dramatically improve your strategy. What's resonating with your audience? What's falling flat? The numbers don't lie, and they'll tell you stories if you listen.

Action step: Look at your early results and note:

  • Which topics generated the most interest
  • When your audience was most active
  • Where people dropped off or lost interest

Don't get discouraged if the numbers aren't huge at first.

The beauty of digital marketing is that every piece of content gives you data to work with. Even "failures" are valuable because they teach you what not to do next time. And sometimes, what looks like a flop initially can gain traction over time—especially on platforms like Pinterest, where content has a much longer lifespan than traditional social media.

This is where the magic happens in your digital marketing journey—taking what you've learned and making it work even better!

The most successful digital marketers aren't necessarily the most talented; they're the ones who pay attention and adapt. Use what you discovered in Day 6 to refine your approach and double down on what's connecting with your audience.

Action step:

  • Identify the top-performing elements from your first week
  • Plan your next week's content focusing on similar themes or formats
  • Eliminate or revise approaches that didn't resonate
  • Set one specific goal to improve in your next round of content

Digital marketing is a constant process of testing and refining, which is actually great news! It means you'll keep getting better results with the same amount of effort as you learn what your specific audience responds to.

Remember: successful digital marketing isn't about being perfect; it's about being persistent and responsive to what your audience tells you they want.
